Please submit a Statement of Purpose...What?

As I am faced with the end of my Undergraduate career, I find myself absolutely freaking out over applying to Grad schools. Perhaps the scariest aspect of the application process is writing the Statement of Purpose. The schools I have looked at so far ask for essays ranging in word length anywhere from 500 to 2,000, and some do not even specify. The SoP, I believe, is slightly different from the personal statement, which I am very familiar with. Since I'm not a 4.0 student, I really need to make myself more appealing. Does anyone have some wise words for muh? Cheers, Ashley #1

I believe, as with the personal statement, that this statement of purpose is your chance to show who you are beyond grades and test scores. Even though they are not the same thing, I would still recommend tailoring your goals to tie in with something unique about yourself...perhaps your experience in Japan? Describe how you came to find out your purpose for going to grad school. However, since I'm sure the tone your statement can have varies from school to school I wouldn't make it as narrative as a Personal Statement. I found this link while looking for information for you. http://career.berkeley.edu/Grad/GradStatement.stm Perhaps it will aid you in your quest.

Kind of echoing what Angie said, maybe you could include what your passion is academically, perhaps it is social justice or economic theory?;) Perhaps include an experience that led you to this passion in life and how this school will help you meet your goals of continued education and future career.
